WP.ME is the only two-letter .me Domain in the World says WordPress Founder and I am glad it’s being used for hosting URL shortner service for WordPress.com hosted Blog. Now all of the blogs hosted at WordPress.com ( which i guess is the 2nd largest Free Blog Host Service after Google’s Blogger.com ) would have a short URL for each and every post.
In general I am very wary of all the URL Shortner service providers and recently my fears almost came true when TR.IM announced to shut down its service at the end of this year. However luckily they are back to business since their announcement worked as a good PR Stunt and some guy bought the service for few bucks.
However WP.ME URL shortner service seems reliable to me, since the WordPress founder claims this service is gonna stay as long as WordPress.com hosted Blogs are there, which hosts millions of blogs and 2nd most popular Free Blogging hosting service too. So it’s unlikely Both WordPress.com and WP.ME would disappear ever.
URL shortner services particularly have gained the popularity in recent years As Twitter goes mainstream, and since Twitter limits the posted message to 140 characters, the Short URL are the only way to share links over there. By default Twitter now uses ‘Bit.ly’ which so far has come up to the expectation of the users and seems solid service.
Anyway This New service WP.me is gonna help both WordPress.com and its users to drive more traffic to their blogs, from the Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. And I am pretty glad about it. While i mostly use self-hosted version of WordPress therefore i look forward to a URL shorntner service by the WordPress folks for self-hosted community as well.
