I guess everyone at least once in a life does run into this problem that is known as ‘Generic Host for Win32 Process Error’ mostly occuring in Windows XP operating system and so did i, therefore i searched for couple of internet resources (see end of the post for credits) to find a solution to this problem that bugs most of the PCs on the planet.

So Here we start by little introduction of the process itself, What is Generic Host Process and How to identify the problem?

Generic Host Process is necessary and required for Windows Networking Services, Many Computer application esp., the one that uses Internet use this application who is run by ’svchost.exe’ – Normally over the period of time when this file is corrupted or whatever other reason may be, Users see following errors appearing on their Windows.

    1. While you are connected to Internet and everything seems to be working alright but you can no longer browse, However you would notice the Internet connection icon tray appear to be working but when you click on the icon in tray, it won’t show up connection window nor you will be able to disconnect or reconnect.

    2. And After few mins a window pops up saying to you ‘ Generic Host Process for win32 has encountered serious problem therefore needs to be Shut Down ‘ – In some cases as i experienced I was to able to surf the internet but this window was bugging me so I had to shut down and this windows does pop up again when you restart.

So What is the solution or How to Fix that ? Here i found some handy tips to fix that (see bottom of the post for credits)

    Solution No.1

    1. 1. In your Start Menu go to ‘Run’ and open ‘Regedit’
    2. 2. Once it’s opened Navigate to
    3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > Browser > Parameters
    4. 3. Find the Key – Name: IsDomainMaster and set Data: False
    5. 4. Restart your Computer

    Solution No.2

    1. Go to ‘Run’ and open ‘cmd’
    2. Type ‘netsh’ in command console then press enter
    3. Then type ‘winsock’ and press enter and then type reset
    4. Restart Your PC

    Solution No 3:

Get the LspFix and follow the steps as directed

Don’t disable the netbios if you do that the port 445 is automatically close you can’t connect to your network and you can’t share any files or printer because that port is for sharing. you can close the port 445 if you don’t want to share or connect to network, closing port 445 is for single pc only……………..

try to reformat and installed winXP again with out hp drivers…. its 100% no generics host will appear
